At the end of the year, Barley Hall is dressed to bring in the festive season and recreate a traditional Christmas in York.
Make yourself at home this Winter in one of the city’s most beloved hidden gems, and discover a host of exclusive events at the Hall.

Traditional Christmas Market
Christmas in York means a visit to the famous St Nicholas Fayre Christmas Markets, which return each year to turn the city centre into a Winter wonderland. For a Christmas experience with a difference, you can escape the cold with a trip through time and discover our festive medieval market, hosted within Barley Hall itself; featuring costumed traders selling hand-crafted items and unique gifts. You can even cosy up with a traditional winter warmer of mulled wine or hearty ale in the tavern bar, which runs every weekend from the start of St Nicholas’ Fayre, straight to the run up to Christmas.
Meet Father Christmas
Treat your children to a Christmas unlike any other, with a visit from Father Christmas himself!
Your child will receive a personal invitation to visit Barley Hall, where you will be greeted by medieval characters and treated to breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. There’s festive games to be played in the beautifully decorated parlour, seasonal stories, hands-on Christmas crafts and, of course, the chance to meet Father Christmas himself! Each child even receives their own personalised gift, making this a Christmas experience that is unique to them, and one that they won’t forget.
This year Father Christmas will be visiting Barley Hall on December 5th/6th/12th/13th.
Medieval Music
Medieval minstrels Trouvere return to Barley Hall this December offering another exciting evening of live medieval music, this time with a distinctly festive feel. Join them in the atmospheric Great Hall for an evening of Christmas music from the Middle Ages, mixed in with seasonal tales and traditions from the era. We’re sure you’ll agree this is a unique musical event.
And More…
Celebrate in style, with the chance to hire the Hall and enjoy your own medieval evening of dining in one of York’s most interesting venues. Enjoy a traditional Christmas with displays, decorations and a look at the history of Christmas as we know it today. With all this and more, Christmas in York isn’t complete without a trip to Barley Hall.
The Hall is open every day in the lead up to Christmas, offering a truly unmissable experience within its walls. Don’t miss the chance to see this stunning townhouse in all its festive glory.
