Battle of Towton Commemorative event

Visit our medieval attractions and help us commemorate one of the bloodiest battles on English soil, the Battle of Towton.

Explore the kings, conflict and politics of the Wars of the Roses. Expect to see costumed characters, special displays and demonstrations showcasing the martial side of life in the Middle Ages.

Join a group of soldiers At Monk Bar who will be more than happy to regale visitors with tales from the battles of Towton and Bosworth,  as well as their war stories from across the Wars of the Roses.

A Barber surgeon will also take residence at Micklegate Bar discussing grisly war wounds and even grislier medieval cures!

Barley Hall, our medieval townhouse, will play host to a series of insightful talks that showcase the functional fashions of the Middle Ages, including;

  • 12.00: The Soldiers of the Wars of the Roses – discover how the common infantry men, the billmen and the archers were armed for combat
  • 13.00: Civilian Costume of the 15th Century – A look at the clothing and behaviour of the residents of medieval York; from the Lords to the peasants and everything in-between
  • 14.00: How a Knight shall be Armed for War – see how a knight would be fully encased in armour ready for the battlefield

*Don’t forget to pick up a Medieval Pass allowing you access to these 3 attractions for 1 great price!
